Questions:
1. Are the cats in the cafe being exploited?
2. The article mentioned, "不少顧客也說,吸引他們光顧的正是可愛的貓咪,一旦沒有貓咪,他們很可能不會來喝咖啡了。".
Do you think these customers morally wrong should they patronise only if
there are cats to "serve" them?
. Do you
support such legislation?

(1)I think the cats are exploited, just like animal shows, whereby the owners of the animals just use the animals as money-earning tools. Applying the concept of equal consideration of interests to the cats,I agree that in allowing strangers to touch the cats will create some sort of threats or, at least discomfort to the cats.
(2)True animal lovers will agree not to touch the cats as a stranger. The coffee shop owner can show the cats' movies or pictures in the coffee shop, instead of putting the cats in there.
(3)The law shall ban it the whole day.
This "cat-cafe" is a funny place for cat-lovers (male and female, old and young) but the atmosphere as described sounds like that in a pussycat night-club, only that we do not have club-girls (no club-boys normally), but club-cats (male and female, or neutered) instead.
To nightclub, only male guests are welcomed. To this "cat-cafe", I guess ALL (male and female) are welcomed.
Night-clubs operate their business all night through.
This "cat-cafe" also operates all night through.
Are club-girls exploited in night-club all night through?
If yes,
Club-cats in "cat-cafe" are also exploited all night through.
But night-clubs are legally allowed in Tokyo and Hong Kong,
so we can only assume there is no illegal exploitation of club-girls.
If club-girls are not exploited,
then
why are these "club-cats" exploited?
Don'y forget that:
(1) Equality of animals is assumed is animal ethics.
(2) Cats normally stay awake at night, never feel sleepy at night. If club-girls who may feel sleepy at night are not supposed to be exploited, how can we conclude that club-cats are exploited.
(3) If club-girls have to welcome and even have sex with all kinds of stranger-guests without complaint of any exploitation, why "club-cats" should be expected to rasie complaint of exploitation when these club-cats only need to welcome stranger- guests during their normally active hours and in fact, WITHOUT sex?
[A] Therefore Davy's point (1) is only personal speculation, without logical proof and support.
[B] (a)Davy loves to love cats in virtuality. This is Davy's personal taste only.
(b)Those who can only pursue Plato's love have no right to forbid other people to physically feel and touch their beloved (be they club-girls or club-cats). T
(c)Therefore Davy's point (2) is not fair or reasonable.
[C] Luckily Davy is NOT our law-maker. If there is no law to ban night-clubs, why should there be law to ban this "cat-cafe"?
Summing up in answering the questions:-
(1)Are the cats in the cafe being exploited?
NO, definitely not.
(2)Do you think these customers morally wrong?
Of course not. They come with love, in love, and without making love. They are lovely people.
(3)"cats to "serve" them?"
It is just the opposite. The cat-lovers come to serve the cats! A cat's physical presence does not mean the cat's mind is there.
(4)Do you support such legislation?
(a) We have to understand that no employers like to see that their employees back to office in the morning without sleep at night. The government is supported by big corporations (big employers). If the "cat-cafe" becomes such a popular place all night through, no people can work properly in the daytime.
(b) Therefore it is just a pretext on protection of cats. Both cats and the cafe owner are scapegoats only. Forbidding the business operation of "cat-cafe" is against human right!
Marie,
It seems you do not understand 「貓性」。
Please do not assume that man can force a cat to be caressed. You can't unless the cat is in the mood to let you caress it.
What you worry about is unnecessary and not true. Sorry.
This question is similar to but another version of Q2: Do you think one morally wrong should one study in LnU (instead of BU, CU) just because LnU has cats on campus to make friends with (whereas BU, CU do not have any)?
